  Prague, February 2010The Czech Republic is without question one of the world's spa superpowers. Here you will find more than 30 spa locations, hundreds of curative springs and other valued healthful natural resources. Let's take a look at what's new at Czech spas and what visitors can look forward to in future.

  Aquatic pleasures in Jáchymov

  In 1906, the Jáchymov spa in the foothills of the Krušné mountains became the first in the world to take advantage of the curative effects of radon water. Patients with ailments of the locomotory system are treated there. From the end of November, here you can also visit thestate-of-the-art Aquacentrum Agricola, located in the oldest (some 100 years old) spa building. You are thus able to enjoy all kinds of aquatic pleasures in an interior that is at once modern and preserved with a number of original historic elements.

  A unique pool in Karlova Studánka

  The Karlova Studánka spa, which lies in the heart of the Jeseníky mountains 800 metres above sea level, has also undergone innovation. Last year, the construction of a unique pool with warm sea water was completed here. In addition to bathing, visitors to the pool also will love the various massage jets. Moreover, the pool is illuminated with white and blue light, creating an exotic atmosphere. This environment is also conducive to pleasant meditation. 

  Unique method in Bohdaneč

  The use of moorlands is common in balneology. In Bohdaneč, however, last year a revolutionary innovation was introduced for the first time in the Czech Republic. Here, mud is administered in wrap-baths. Here's how it works: The patient lies down on a special water bed, not coming into direct contact with the water. The staff then applies the mud to the client and makes a wrap. Warm water in the water bed maintains the heat of the wrap without heating up the client at the same time, as in a classical mud bath. Thanks to this innovation, a wider range of people-even, for example, persons with cardiac conditions-can treat themselves to this therapy. This innovation is the result of some 3 years of study to confirm its beneficial effect. The procedure helps with rheumatism and back and joint pains and, moreover, helps to conserve the natural curative resource (moorlands).

  Award of the year for Františkovy Lázně

  The spa companyFrantiškovy Lázněwon the title Czech Spa Company of 2009. This illustrious acknowledgement is given each year at the Spa Festival to award high quality in medicinal balneology. The winners from previous years can be found at www.spalife.info.

  Spa Suite in Karlovy Vary

  The offering of spas is not limited only to classical spa stays. Wellness programmes also are becoming increasingly popular. At the hotel Carlsbad Plaza, now on offer is thewellness concept entitled Spa Suite, offering the possibility to rent a total of three spa locations (for 2.5 hrs.) for two people and to enjoy procedures there in absolute privacy.

  Weight loss at the Lednice and Bělohrad spas

  Last year, the new spa resort Tree of Life, which specialises in troubles of the locomotory system, opened at Ann's Peat Spa in Lázně Bělohrad. Excess weight is often the cause of such problems, and, therefore, here they also help people to lose weight. They now have there a state-of-the-art Exilis apparatus, which serves for non-invasive liposuction, and have acquired other weight-loss machines.

  Treatment of the locomotory system (among others) also is offered at the Lednice Spa in South Moravia. This spa, too, caters to people wanting to shed excess pounds. The spa prides itself in the fact that it has joined the list of places having the state-of-the-art Cellu M6 machine. The machine is used not only for weight loss but also, for example, to treat aching backs and burn wounds.

  What's on the cards for Jeseník?

  Procedures under the open sky

  The Priessnitz health spa in Jeseník, which is the first hydrotherapy spa in the world, is undergoing a great transformation. This year, a park will gradually be developed in which people will be able to treat themselves to Priessnitz hydrotherapy procedures directly under the open sky. The park will feature various pools, rivulets, showers and other hydrotherapy "attractions" designed to improve blood circulation in various parts of the body. Each procedure will be supplemented with an information panel containing a description of how exactly to proceed in order to achieve the best possible therapeutic effect. The innovations don't end there. The current spa building is undergoing reconstruction and in spring will transform into a modern rest and relaxation centre in the legacy of Vincenz Priessnitz.
