Kunětická hora Castle

Hrad Kunětická hora

533 52 Staré Hradiště

Archaeological research dates the original construction to the mid-14th century. The greatest reconstruction was undertaken by the Pernštein family in the years 1491-1548, which resulted in the creation of a massive double-towered castle with an ingenious fortification system. At the end of the Thirty Years War the castle was severely damaged by Swedish troops. Partial reconstruction of the castle didn’t occur until the 1920’s; the work was designed by D. Jurkoviče and continued after the conclusion of the Second World War. With a little bit of luck visitors can see all the way to the ridge of the Krkonoše Mts. from this dominant landmark in the Pardubice area.

Description A tour of the newly restored, four-decade-inaccessible western part of the castle, the appearance of which was largely determined in the 1920s by the architect Dušan Jurkovič. The circuit includes a modern exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Dušan Jurkovič (author of Pusteven na Radhošti, Luhačovice spa complex, modifications of Nové Město nad Metují Chateau, Jurkovič Villa in Brno and many others) and a major reconstruction of the castle complex, which Jurkovič led on Kunětická hora one hundred years ago. The tour also includes a visit to Jurkovič's historic interiors of the sixth gate, including the so-called Green and Red Lounges, and an ascent to the lookout. The tour is accessible only with a guide. Occasionally in the cellar you can access and walk around the uncovered remains of a massive cylindrical tower from the 14th century.
